I situated my body of work on the theme of preservation; more specifically the preservation (deconstruction and reconstruction) of shame. What does shame look like from a postcolonial lens? Who determines modesty and shame around the body.
My process began with self reflection; looking inside to get to the core of why I chose this topic to explore. My work revolves around time, fluidity of identity, natural life and preservation.
I am at the center of all my work, and this piece is an exploration of my experiences and relationships.
The focus within this specific piece of work is on the chest, breast, areolas and nipples as the space where shame resides the most. The aim is to reclaim those parts of the body through the castings and challenge the notion that females bodies have to be hidden.
Pollution as Colonisation
I am looking at pollution as a form of colonisation and this is my understanding: There are consequences for our actions, the earth is not ours to dominate, and pollution is an extension of a colonial mindset.

The project evolved into a collaboration with a range of participants whose chests I made molds of in alginate. I poured a spirulina (algae) based bioplastic into the molds, creating casts of their breasts and nipples.
I experimented with multiple kinds of bioplastics, exploring different measurements and consistencies to get my desired result. The reason for working with bioplastic was to ensure whatever I make, will go back into the soil, and broken down.
